About

Kiwis for Hou Minghao

A place for everyone to discover, discuss, and celebrate Hou Minghao.

Welcome to Kiwis for Hou Minghao — an independent fan site created for everyone who enjoys the work of Chinese actor and singer Hou Minghao (侯明昊), and especially for the Kiwis who have been following his journey.

Hou Minghao has built a career across both acting and music, from his early days as a singer to the many characters he has brought to life on screen. Today, his filmography spans youth dramas, mystery, wuxia, xianxia, fantasy, romance, and more. His music career continues alongside his acting, including original songs, drama OSTs, live performances, and collaborations.

Why I Created This Site

I created Kiwis for Hou Minghao because I couldn’t find an English-language fan site that gave me one place to easily keep track of his work and career.

There was already a lovely community on Reddit, and I’m grateful that a space like that exists for international fans. But I kept thinking that it would be wonderful to have a dedicated website too — somewhere we could collect information, write, discuss, and appreciate his work in a way that doesn’t get lost in a constantly moving social-media feed.

More than simply following updates, I wanted a place where we could slow down.

A place where we can talk about his characters, examine his performances, revisit his dramas, appreciate the details in his acting, explore his music, and share the things that make his work meaningful to us.

And, perhaps most importantly, I wanted to create a place where I could write again.

I’m not someone who believes we can truly know a person simply by watching them through a screen. We see only what a public figure chooses to share with us. But I do believe in paying attention to what I see.

In the way that Hou Minghao chooses to present himself to the world — passionate, thoughtful, shy, sometimes playful, and overall sincere in the way he approaches the people and things that matter to him — I’ve found moments that resonated with me personally.

The way he lives and approaches his own journey has, in its own small way, inspired me to pick up writing again.

So this site is partly about him, but it’s also about what his work inspires in the people who watch it.

What Does “Kiwi” Mean? 🥝

Kiwis is the name used by Hou Minghao’s fandom.

The Chinese fandom name is 猕猴桃 (míhóutáo), meaning kiwi fruit, and fans are also commonly referred to as 桃妹 (Taomei) and other affectionate variations.

Hou Minghao’s fans are called “Kiwis” because of a clever Chinese wordplay (punning) on his name. In Chinese, kiwi fruit is called míhóutáo (猕猴桃), which sounds very similar to a playful blending of his family name and given name, or a pun/nickname like mí-Hào-táo ( meaning “fascinated by Hou”).

The connection between Hou Minghao and the kiwi nickname has become an established part of his fan culture.

So if you’re a Kiwi, welcome.

And if you’re new to Hou Minghao and don’t know what a Kiwi is yet — welcome anyway. 🥝

You don’t have to have been here from the beginning to have a place here.

For International Fans

One of the things I hope this site can do is make Hou Minghao’s work more accessible to people who don’t speak Chinese.

There is so much conversation, information, music, interviews, and fan culture surrounding Chinese artists that can be difficult for international fans to navigate when they don’t read Chinese.

I want Kiwis for Hou Minghao to help bridge some of that gap.

Not by replacing the wonderful Chinese fan communities that already exist, but by creating another place where international fans can discover his work, understand more of the context around it, and share their own perspectives.
